OUR PHILOSOPHY

IMG_0059.jpg

Our classes are not about being the fittest, coolest and fiercest dancer out there (unless that’s your goal, in which case we’ll help you reach it!). To us, dance is ALL about you being YOU, in YOUR body, exploring and embracing the joy and liberation of movement in a safe space with humans of all backgrounds, dance levels, shapes and sizes.

My promise to you is that our classes will leave you feeling empowered, alive, and in your body. With over 10 years of experience from teaching and a Bachelor of Arts (Early Childhood Education) I take humble pride in my ability to make my students feel seen and heard, just as they are. All classes are adapted to the students’ level of dance & the energy in the room.

Together, we move to the music, get fit on the go, and challenge each other to let go of our expectations and limitations all the while having heaps of fun!

We’d love to have you join our Core crew of dancers and movers of Margaret River!

My name is Mikku, and mine is the heart and soul behind Core Dance Collective. CDC came about in 2020, when I found my way back to one of my biggest passions in life: dance.

Dance has been one of the cornerstones of my life for as long as I can remember. My journey has taken me from Finland, where I spent all my childhood and teenage years in dance class, to Stockholm, New York City, and Margaret River. In Stockholm, I spent a year of full time studies at a performing arts school, where my curriculum consisted of ballet, jazz, modern, and hip hop. In New York City I had the opportunity to learn from brilliant contemporary teachers such as Max Stone, Jennifer Archibald and Oliver Steele, while undertaking an international student visa program at a local dance school.

Upon my return to Finland as a twenty-something young woman, I was filled with inspiration and a hunger not only to learn more, but also to teach and share my knowledge. Focusing mainly on contemporary jazz and show dance, I kept on studying, teaching and choreographing for many different venues and events as well as national dance competitions.

Fast forward a couple of years and one uni degree in teaching, and my travels around the world has taken me to a remote town in Western Australia, located right by the ocean. Setting up a new life under the sun momentarily put a pause to my dancing, but now I am beyond excited to start sharing my passion for dance with the Margies community.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A CLASS?

All you need to bring is a water bottle and socks.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable dancing in.

Come with an open and curious mind.

Please respect everyone’s schedules by being on time. Try to arrive at least 5 min prior to class.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR FIRST CLASS?

If you’ve never attended a dance class, it’s normal to feel nervous, like you’re stepping out of your comfort zone - which you are. Your body might be moving in ways it has never done before and needs some time to adjust. Muscle memory is real and takes a while to build up. This is why you’ll gain more and more from each consecutive class you come to.

If you feel sore the next day - don’t worry! You can view this as amazing feedback from your new workout!

Taking the time to join a dance class is a beautiful gift for yourself. It’s never too late to start something new!
